The story
This proposal re-defines the urban identity of the area where the NDP building once stood. The story starts with a population that revolted against its ruling government due to corruption, oppression, authoritarian rule, censorship, and restrictive speech. The governing party’s building was initially burned by the rebellions, then completely demolished. The project proposes to revise the old urban memory of the site by creating an artist residency that attracts cultural industries. It aims to bring the underground art to the surface, and nurture the country's emerging start-ups and up-and-coming artists. It provides them with space to create and to exhibit their art (music, performing art, literature, visual art, filmography, photography, etc.). The project becomes a vibrant destination by itself over the Nile, gathering all art industries in one place, and fostering creativity. It defines a new way of life across the city while looking at the existing cultural nodes around the area (the opera cultural complex).
The design
The project features several arts stops along the bridge distributed over several cascading platforms, providing hubs for established studios and galleries. It showcases a mix of contemporary open, semi-open, and shaded communal working and performance facilities, around a series of public piazzas and pedestrian walkways. Flexible modules are employed to adapt the functions to any configuration, establishing an inclusive community. A variety of structures and architecture features related to the local identity were employed in a way to inspire creativity.
